In 1974 painters and print-makers founded Atlantic Gallery as a Brooklyn artists' cooperative responding to conditions in New York City’s art market of the 1970’s. In 1979 Atlantic Gallery migrated to SoHo, and in 2007 to Chelsea, having added photographers and sculptors to its community of emerging and seasoned artists.
Since its inception, Atlantic Gallery has favored forward looking approaches to organizing exhibitions by emerging artists and arts professionals. Born amid the energy of ’70’s New York, the gallery has refined its tradition of independence, flexibility and responsiveness to new artistic trends and cultural circumstances. Of the original thirty five plus alternative spaces in New York City which were artist-centered rather than market-based, Atlantic Gallery remains one of twelve artists-founded galleries continuously exhibiting into the new century.
Atlantic Gallery nurtures creative risk taking as well as innovative audience development. In championing democratic attitudes among artists, and by offering opportunities for collaboration, Atlantic Gallery upholds its firm commitment to artist-centered initiatives which are crucial to cultural vitality of New York City.
